2022 Central-East Gaelic Football Championship- Berlin

Competitive football returned to the German capital for the first time in nearly four years this past weekend, as Berlin GAA hosted Round 2 of the Central-East Regional Championship.

The Berlin GAA men were represented by an A and B team, with the men's A side winning the tournament with a comfortable victory over Prague Hibernians in the final. Berlin GAA are going for a third championship title in a row, having won the title in 2018 and 2019 before the pandemic meant the competition did not take place in 2020 and 2021.

The Berlin men’s B team had an outstanding day as well, beating Munich to advance to the semi-finals. Well done lads!

Similarly our Berlin GAA women were out in force and also fielded A and B teams. In a repeat of the Round 1 final in Bratislava, the A team had to go to extra time against Prague in the semi final before securing the win and their place in the final. Here the Berlin GAA A team faced a very strong Zurich side and had to settle for second place. A special mention goes to Maeve Killen who was awarded Ladies Player of the Tournament for her outstanding performance on the pitch!

The B team saw a lot of players line out for their first competitive tournament in the green and black. The team made it to the shield final but unfortunately missed out on the silverware.

Hosting a tournament is no small feat and would not have been possible without the efforts of our volunteers. In particular our chairperson Lisa and vice-chair Sarah who put in countless hours to ensure the day ran smoothly, our sponsors Jono and the team at CBS who helped preparing the lunches and even gifted a free hot sauce with every lunch, groundskeeper Detlef at Sportanlage Jungfernheide, Neil at Dalriata, Brauhaus Südstern, deputy ambassador John Lynam who helped award the prizes on the night, and everyone who was involved in the organisation of the day!
